Aghghgh indeed! I do think it’s good to plan local events as not everyone is in a position to travel to the path of totality. Most of the people in the US will in fact see this as a partial eclipse. However, there is a responsibility on those arranging events to inform that even 97% is NOT the same as a total solar eclipse. A good thing to do is to point to where options are available for traveling into the path, and then outline a viewing experience for the partial for those who cannot travel on the day.

A guy in my town is planning a bunch of events here for people to observe the deep partial eclipse. I tried to tell him that it was a big mistake, that instead he should be organizing buses or something to drive down to totality, but he insists “97% is good enough for me.” Aaaugghh.

I had a sister-in-law that wondered why the “supermoon” just looked the same as a regular moon. Sadly, the NASA news feed that a lot of our local press uses was the source of much of the breathless hype. But of course I was also taking pictures, the full Moon is also fun.
I am currently doing eclipse outreach in both Kentucky (at Western Kentucky University) and in Tennessee (on my own), focusing on K-12 students in Kentucky and community preparedness in Tennessee. Most of the schools in Kentucky will be in session, so we want the teachers comfortable with the eclipse and we want to get as many students into the path of totality as possible. So yes, we are trying to convey how special this is and what an opportunity to only have to travel a short distance to see a total eclipse. For so many of our rural students, truly a once in a lifetime event.
Thanks for all you are doing!
